Ep #106: The Power of Identity The #1 Secret to Achieving Your Goals

Jim Fortin — mindset coach and unconscious performance expert who has coached top 1% real estate and mortgage professionals for 25+ years · Wed, 06 Feb 2019
Mindset & ProductivityPersonal Branding

Jim Fortin dismantles the 'work harder' myth and argues that goals are not achieved through effort or behavior change alone — they are achieved by reshaping your subconscious identity first. He walks through a concrete pyramid framework (Environment → Behavior → Capabilities → Beliefs → Identity) and explains why most LOs cycle through the same patterns year after year. Best for LOs who set income goals every January and miss them every year.

You don't get what you want — you get what your unconscious identity believes you are; change the identity first, and the behavior and income follow automatically.

The playbook

  1. Step 1 — Define the IDENTITY: Ask 'Who is the person who already has the result I want?' List their specific characteristics (committed, self-integral, 100% responsible, visionary).
  2. Step 2 — Define the BELIEFS: What must that person believe about money, effort, and their own capability? Write 3-5 belief statements in first person.
  3. Step 3 — Define the CAPABILITIES: What specific skills does that identity require? (e.g., consistent prospecting, pipeline management, scripting).
  4. Step 4 — Define the BEHAVIORS: Only now list the daily/weekly actions — because the behavior must be consistent with the identity, or it will collapse within days.
  5. Step 5 — Define the ENVIRONMENT: This is your goal — the external result (income, units, body weight). It sits at the top of the pyramid and is the OUTPUT, not the starting point.
  6. Step 6 — Reinforce daily with the 3x visualization ritual (morning, noon, night) focusing on the feeling of already having the environment/result.

Worth quoting

“Money doesn't come from effort. It comes from identity.”
“A victorious warrior wins in his mind and then goes to battle. A defeated warrior goes to battle and then tries to win.”

Best for

LOs who consistently set ambitious income goals, work long hours, and still miss their targets — and suspect the problem is internal, not tactical.
